Meet the Author

  • Alvin Sherman Library: Fourth Floor, Room 4009 3100 Ray Ferrero Junior Boulevard Davie, FL, 33314 United States (map)

Dr. Batia Cohen shares her newest book.  Shura tells the incredible true story of her husband’s grandmother, Shura, and other WWII survivors. From the moment Dr. Cohen met Shura, she knew this was a story that needed to be told. After losing her mother as an infant, Shura faced a childhood of unimaginable hardship, eventually escaping Nazi persecution, jumping out of a moving train headed to the extermination camp of Majdanek. She then went on to join the Bielski partisans, the resistance group later popularized by the film Defiance.

Over the years, Dr. Cohen interviewed Shura, conducted extensive research, and traveled twice to Lithuania and Belarus.
Dr. Cohen spent years traveling and researching to verify these facts, and she is honored to share Shura's legacy with a global audience.

Shura, previously published in Spanish, is now available in English.
